Dye, Fazio, Jones, Love, Nicklaus, Palmer, Strantz and Dan Maples all left a course on this coast. Playing their work back to back in one week is the quickest education in golf architecture a group can get, and the green fee is a fraction of what those names cost anywhere else.

Golfers from the northeast and the midwest come down in March to play in short sleeves while their home course is still under frost. The rest of us play right through the year. The marsh courses are at their best in October when the light goes gold and the fairways are firm.

Myrtle Beach was built for groups, not just for golfers.

Oceanfront condos that sleep eight, golf villas on the course, houses for a whole outing. The lodging here was designed around foursomes and eightsomes decades ago. That is why a group of twelve lands and everything is already sorted, from the beds to the carts.

A big group plays better here than anywhere.

Twenty four golfers on a course that is used to twenty four golfers is a different day from twenty four golfers squeezed onto a members club. The starters here run groups all morning. They have the pace, the carts and the cooler stocked before the first foursome rolls up.

The value is real, and I have checked it against everywhere.

I price trips against Scottsdale, Pinehurst and Florida every winter. For the same quality of golf and the same number of rounds, Myrtle Beach comes in well under them, year after year. The package rates have been the business model here for fifty years and the courses are built for it.

One morning you are in the Lowcountry marsh with the tide moving beside the green. The next you are in tall pines. The next you are on the ocean with the wind in play. Three different kinds of golf, one trip, and every one of them is a proper course, not a filler round.

Spring and fall in Myrtle Beach are the best golf weeks in America.

Mid March through May and late September through November. Mild air, firm fairways, long light and the courses in their peak condition. If you can only make one golf trip a year, make it one of those windows and you will understand why the regulars guard their dates.

The nineteenth hole here is as good as the eighteen before it.

A golf trip is the golf and the evenings. Myrtle Beach has waterfront dinners, steakhouses, live music and a boardwalk, all a short ride from the lodging. The group that plays thirty six holes and still has somewhere good to go at eight is the group that books again.

Flying in is easy, and driving in is easier.

Direct flights from most of the eastern half of the country, and a day on the road from the Carolinas, Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Half our groups drive down with the clubs in the back. Either way the travel day is short enough that you can play the afternoon you arrive.

Caledonia, True Blue, Tidewater, the Dunes Club, Barefoot, Grande Dunes. These are courses that would be the headline anywhere else in the country, and here they are a Tuesday. The depth of the list is what sets this coast apart, not one famous name.

The scratch player gets Dye and Strantz from the tips. The twenty handicap gets wide fairways and forward tees at the same course. A bachelor party, a corporate outing and three generations of one family can all play the same week and each of them will say it was built for them.
